Welcome!

Thyroid
Having a thyroidectomy is a MAJOR surgery that many people (myself included) often dismiss at first or don’t realize what the after life will truly be like; living life without a thyroid.

There are many horror stories on the internet about thyroid cancer/thyroidectomy. I’m here to say that you can have  a GREAT life after having a thyroidectomy and there are a TON of positive stories out there!

This blog is to share those positive stories with others who may have just been told their thyroids will have to be removed, or their loved ones looking to learn more. Whether it’s due to cancer, hyperthyroidism or another reason, please share your story with the world, to be posted in this space, by going to this form.

Or if you want to post a general question or comment, feel free to reply to the blog posts or contact me at lifewithoutathyroid AT gmail dot com 🙂

Love,

Sparky

I am glad that you are living a “positive” life after TT, but I feel I have to say it seems a slap in the fact for those of us who struggle on a daily basis just to keep going.

I take my vitamins, I take herbs, I try to eat all natural. I watch the chemicals. To no avail. Finally found a doctor willing to look at Armour as opposed to synthroid, and that is the only reason I haven’t gone crazy. She will let me run a little high but otherwise cannot get anyone to understand that I’m not “right”. It’s not due to laziness or lack of trying, or not paying attention to how I take care of myself. I try, then I hit days that it seems no matter what I do, I just want to crawl into bed and never wake up. Please don’t minimize what we go through like a magic wave of the wand will help us feel better.

    • Hi Melissa,
I understand what you are saying; I have those days, too. Life after losing a thyroid isn’t at all like it was before. The purpose of this site is more about people understanding that there IS life after losing a thyroid, even if the life is different.

      Wishing you the best,
      Sarah

I had my total thyroid removed in 2011 due to multi-toxic goiter and Grave’s Disease. Prior to being diagnosed as hyperthyroid, I was a mess: high blood pressure and heart rate, insomnia, bowel problems, skin issues, anxiety and on and on. I couldn’t tolerate the anti-thyroid medications, my liver enzymes went nuts, and didn’t want RAI, so surgery was my only option to regain my health.

After surgery, my hyperthyroid symptoms went away, however I had hypothyroid alternating with hyperthryoid issues initially before finding the correct Synthroid dosage. Adjustments in Synthroid dosage were needed with even minor weight or lifestyle changes.

I’ve found the key to keeping my thyroid happy is consistency in my lifestyle including diet, weight, exercise, sleep, stress levels. I also eat gluten-free and don’t drink alcohol.

I feel really, really good now. There can be a good life without a thyroid, but it does take work!
